When you’re taking stock of all you’re thankful for this year, here’s one more thing to include on your list: The cost of a complete Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people is the lowest it’s been since 2010!
Turkey is 4 cents per pound cheaper this year
The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) is out with its 33rd annual survey of the cost of items that make up a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
The good news for your wallet is that last year’s trend of prices declining continues again this year.
A feast with all the fixings for 10 people will cost an average of $48.90 this year. That’s down more than 20 cents from last year’s average of $49.12.
Turkey, for example, is four cents per pound cheaper this year. The average 16-pound turkey priced out at around $1.36 per pound or $21.71 for a bird.
These foods also went down in cost this year:
- Gallon of milk, $2.92 (down seven cents from $2.99 last year)
- One dozen rolls, $2.25 (down a penny from $2.26)
- Three-pound bag of sweet potatoes, $3.39 (down from $3.52)
- One-pound bag of green peas, $1.47 (down from $1.53)
Yet some foods cost more this year. These items saw a small rise in cost in 2018 versus 2017:
- 12-ounce bag of fresh cranberries, $2.65 (up from $2.43 last year)
- 30-ounce can of pumpkin pie mix, $3.33 (up from $3.21)
- 14-ounce package of cubed bread stuffing, $2.87 ($2.81 last year)
- Two nine-inch pie shells, $2.47 ($2.45 last year)
- 1-pound veggie tray, $0.75 (up one penny from last year)
More than 160 volunteer shoppers in 37 states tallied prices at grocery stores for this year’s survey.
The prices they reported do not include special promotional coupons or purchase deals — like spending a certain amount of money at a store and receiving a free turkey.
